How to Get a Hiring Manager's Name

Hiring_Manager_picture.jpg Job postings often times read, “No phone calls” or “Direct resume to website”, or provide directions that get you to a Human Resource department or a company job posting site. So how can you get the name of the hiring manager, an internal recruiter, or someone in Human Resources so you can follow up?

I’m not going to lie - - it can be tough. But it can be done! It takes a bit of work and some Sherlock Holmes type sleuthing, but anything worth having is worth working for – right?

Here are a few ideas and some places to start you investigating - -

  1. Call the Receptionist: Call the receptionist at the company where you are applying. You can ask him / her for the name of the person in Human Resources. Often after a bit of engaging conversation, the name will be revealed to you.
  1. Ask to be directed to the Human Resource department: When calling a company, ask to be directed to the Human Resource department. You will likely get the voicemail of a person within the department, and pick up a name from the voicemail. Even if s/he is not exactly the person you are trying to reach, when your resume shows up the individual will pass it along to the appropriate counterpart in the department.
  1. Use social media: More digging here! Use LinkedIn and / or Facebook to find a name. If you are on LinkedIn you will need to do a lot of looking to identify people who are associated with the company you are targeting. Join affiliated groups so you can write to those people directly without the need for an introduction. Once identified, introduce yourself to the person in your targeted company, network with them, and obtain a name.

Facebook takes a little more work, as you need to introduce yourself first, and then be added as a friend. But still worth the digging!

  1. Find a listing of senior management: Traditional research also works. When doing research on a company, you will oftentimes find a listing of senior management. Start there by sending a letter or email to one of the individuals on the list. You may get a response asking you to send your resume to them directly, or they might respond with the name of someone within the company to reach out to.
  1. Network with everyone you know: The rule of six degrees of separation is what LinkedIn is all about. For every person you know, that person knows six people. You can get names from friends, friends of friends, acquaintances, and many more.

 Strike up a conversation with the individual in line in front of you at the grocery store, with the repair person who comes to your house, with the neighbor next door - - let everyone know that your job right now is looking for a job. You never know when you will uncover a name or a lead.

  1. Get a trade publication: The trades publish newsworthy information about what is going on in their specific industry and continuously publish the names of people and companies. This is a great way to stay abreast of industry happenings, too. Check out your local library, or search on the Internet for this type of trade information.
